How to find out if someone is there
Use the Sheriff's Office bookings search at spartanburgsheriff.org/258/Bookings-Search, or call the front desk with the person's full name and date of birth. City police, the Sheriff's Office, town police, and the Highway Patrol all book arrests in Spartanburg County here.
If the person is not there, they may have been arrested in another county. The jails in Greenville, Cherokee, Union, and Laurens counties are listed on the jail and courts page. Arrests in Polk County, North Carolina, are handled under North Carolina law.
Bond court inside the detention center
Magistrates hold bond hearings at the detention center. The Sheriff's Office says they are usually held every day at 11 a.m., 6 p.m., 9 p.m., and midnight, and after that as needed. The bond hearing guide explains what happens there.
People who want to act as an accommodation bondsman, a property owner signing the bond for a friend or relative, apply at the magistrate court office in the detention center. Bring photo ID, the address of the property, and the balances of any liens, judgments, or other bonds you have signed.
The Sheriff's Office says a list of licensed bondsmen with phone numbers is made available to all detainees. Bondsmen may not solicit business in the jail or courts (S.C. Code § 38-53-170).
Phone calls, mail, and messages
According to the Sheriff's Office, people held at the detention center can place and receive calls through a contract phone system, receive mail including approved text messages and photos, and take part in scheduled visits. Family and friends can use approved messaging services. For phone services or mail rules, call 864-596-3424.
Visits
The visitation policy says a person held at the detention center generally gets two 30-minute video visit slots per week, plus one paid remote visit of 20 or 40 minutes, unless visits have been restricted. Visits are scheduled through SmartInmate. Visitors should arrive early to check in at the electronic kiosk in the lobby of the main jail; arriving late can cost the visit, and a missed slot counts as one of the two weekly visits. All visitors except small children need photo ID.
Visitation can be restricted for safety or other legitimate reasons, so read the current policy before planning a trip.
Release
Once bond is delivered to the jail, state law requires release within a reasonable time, not more than four hours (S.C. Code § 22-5-510). Busy nights and weekends are slower. If you are picking someone up, bring ID and a charged phone, and wait in the public lobby.
When the person comes out, make sure they have their bond paperwork. It lists the conditions of release and usually the first court date. Put every court date on a calendar the same day.
Release notifications
South Carolina's SAVIN service lets anyone sign up anonymously to be notified when an inmate is released or transferred. The state's county contact list also lists every county jail's phone number.
